The majority of my practice involves the use of egg tempera and gold leaf on hand-made gesso panels. About 30 years ago I was taught the ancient techniques of egg tempera and gilding, when attending classes run by Jane Knott, a well known egg tempera teacher and painter.
I always felt that the medium could be used in a more contemporary way and I have spent many years revisiting and exploring this beautiful medium, using multi-layered glazes, combined with drawing into the gesso surface of the panel. My work sometimes has an abstract quality and my inspiration is derived from the landscape, nature, the human form and collections of meaningful objects.
Although egg tempera has a tradition of being used in a very disciplined way to portray saints and angels, its luminous quality, brilliance of colour and sensual surface, make it an exciting and wide-ranging medium for a more contemporary approach.
